Nikki Heherson A. Dagamac, Dr.rer.nat. is a distinguished Filipino biologist recognized for his innovative contributions to microbial ecology and biodiversity conservation. Named as one of the Outstanding Young Scientist of the Philippines in 2022 by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Dr. Dagamac has championed research that bridges modern science and conservation efforts.
Dr. Dagamac has spearheaded efforts to enhance biodiversity monitoring in Mindoro. His work focuses on developing cutting-edge detection methods for species like the critically endangered tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis) and other key wildlife. This project integrates molecular tools and ecological assessments, advancing conservation strategies for threatened species in one of the Philippines’ most vital ecological frontiers. Dr. Dagamac has uncovered the intricate relationships between microbial communities and their environments, providing vital insights for biodiversity conservation. His studies emphasize the need to protect endangered ecosystems, particularly in biodiversity hotspots vulnerable to climate change and deforestation.
A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas and the University of Greifswald in Germany, Dr. Dagamac has authored numerous influential publications and mentored emerging scientists. Through his work, he champions the role of biology in conserving ecosystems and landscapes, fostering sustainable development, and inspiring a new generation of Filipino scientists.
