More than 60 representatives from different offices and agencies gathered in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, last October to discuss and set plans for future steps on tamaraw conservation. The 3-day workshop was co-organized by DAF in collaboration with its international partners from Re:Wild, ZSL and IUCN AWCSG and the Philippine DENR.
The agenda included a one day review of the Tamaraw Conservation and Management Action Plan with updates on the status of tamaraw 5 years after the Population and Habitat Viability Assessment workshop in 2018. It was followed by a one day discussion on how to increase protection effectiveness by introducing wildlife crime prevention science then a one day brainstorming using a value-based decision process to explore the feasibility for translocation and ex-situ intervention.
More workshops and meetings will be conducted in the coming months to build on the outcomes of this event.
