Elicitation workshop to gather perceptions from partners working with Indigenous people on Mindoro

One of the big questions around tamaraw conservation is the acceptability of local indigenous communities sharing their living space with the species for specific measures and interventions that could be considered in the future to achieve conservation goals. This includes the possibility to conduct translocation or establish ex-situ program.

This is the reason for the Feasibility Study (FS) which is currently undertaken by DAF and its partners from the @Zoological Society of London, and the @IUCN Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group. The FS aims to determine what kind of additional management options are feasible or requested to manage the metapopulations and ultimately recover a functioning tamaraw population across Mindoro.

On that purpose, a group of local stakeholders who are familiar with working with IPs or tamaraw were convened for a day workshop in San Jose to discuss the possible impact and acceptability of such measures on the concerned communities. The result of the workshop will inform the design of the activities of the future phases of the FS specifically in consulting and engaging with indigenous peoples and other local stakeholders, if such intrusive approach had to be undertaken.

We thank the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, Tamaraw Conservation Program, Mounts Iglit Baco Natural Park Protected Area Management Office, @Mount Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary, Local Government of Sablayan, Local Government of Barangay Manoot, in Rizal, D’ABOVILLE Foundation and its Taobuid technical staff for taking part of this exercise.
